Backbiting, Hairsplitting, Heartwrenching Tumors in the Church! When you hear the word, "injustice," many thoughts come to mind. Perhaps you may think the word means one of the following definitions: An unjust act or behavior against another individual. A breach of contract/covenant with another by vow, actions or deeds. An accusation leveled at another person, involving the sin of presumption, criticism and condemnation. An overtly hurtful behavior, prejudicial act, intentional or unintentional deed that causes another to become wounded, feel misunderstood, rejected, insecure and a multitude of other unfavorable outcomes No, these are not definitions from the well-known Websters dictionary; they are my perspectives of what injustices are and no matter if they are intentional or not, they hurt, divide people and circumvent the plans that God has for His beloved children! Paul felt compelled by the Holy Spirit to tell the Church to be humble servants and to prefer others better than yourself! (Phil. 2: 3,4) A lack of humility and servant-heartedness will inevitably lead to schisms, contentions, broken lives and ministries, if injustices in the Body are ignored or denied. So, who then, is the author of injustice in the Church? The perpetuator of all sinful behaviors, none other than, the accuser of the brethren, Satan, the adversary of all humanity, is the one who deceives, connives, contrives and instigates people to think evil of one another. No matter how godly we think that we are, we have all been deceived by the enemy at one time or another in believing evil of another brother/sister and perhaps, even spreading gossip about them, in attempting to undo their obvious wrong! The Biblical pattern in Matthew 18 teaches us to confront our brother/sister face to face and if they don’t receive our words, bring witnesses, not to destroy him/her but in an effort to restore the individual and bring resolution to the issue at hand! (The final step is to bring the individual before the Church, that the Lord’s Body can be healed, reconciled and flowing in His intended grace. This is not done to embarrass or ostracize the person who refuses to listen and confess, instead it is done to bring swift resolution and to avoid a spiritual cancer from growing in the Body. It also encourages the Church to walk reverently with the Lord! ) Matthew 18: 15-17. If you are breathing today, you have experienced the blows of injustice. Injustice intends to "blow your house down down!!!" Injustice intends to trip you, paralyze you, isolate you from loved ones and the Church at large! Injustice intends to stand against all possibilities of ministry being received, crippling it’s victims into believing that they are unacceptable to God, because man, made in His image and born to be imitators of Christ, fails to seek justice in unjust circumstances! Why do men pursue the way of injustice, unfairness and the broad road that leads to destructiveness? Oftentimes, they are influenced by another person who has briefed them on the behavior of a particular individual and they don’t ask the Lord what is really happening, putting their faith in the perspectives of man instead of the perspective of the Lord! Another reason that people pursue the path of accusation, interrogation, mistrust and judgmentalism, is that they themselves have been treated in such a fashion and feel justified in bringing the same measures of discipline or instructiveness to others, since they were mentored to do so! And yet another possible reason for this kind of perpetration of darkness is that the accusing" individual or "questioning" party is extremely wounded themselves and neglects the examination of his/her heart, looking for fault in others. These people need healing, deliverance and help to process through their own issues so that they don’t transfer their problems/behaviors/habits onto the lives of others. Another consideration in the matter of injustices in the Church is that unraveling injustices, healing breaches and reconciling people to each other is time-consuming and time has become a rare entity in the Body of Christ! This kind of healing and reuniting is usually a process and there may be some trails that lead to deadends until the Lord directs the investigating parties to the truth! King Saul, the first King of Israel, relentlessly pursued his predecessor, David, committing many acts of injustice against the psalmist. Yet, David, being a God-fearer and a God-lover, determined not to touch God’s anointed vessel, (the double-minded Saul), because the young man was purposed to be pleasing to the Lord. Yet, even King David failed to be just all the time when he committed murder in an adulterous passion to rid himself of the husband of Bathsheba, the eventual mother of King Solomon. David’s injustice cost him the life of their firstborn son, by Bathsheba, driving him to fall before the Lord in heartfelt repentance, knowing his heinous act was sin against the Lord, Himself! (Psalm 51: 1-17). Injustices must be revealed, resolved and brought to the table in the Church, His Body, so that lives may be healed, ministries can be fortified, birthed, resurrected and in some cases, exhumed, that Jesus may be glorified in His Body! The simple action that must be taken by both parties, "humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up!" (1 Peter 5:6). Cast down those vain imaginations, refuse to believe what the gossip mill is prophesying and go to the source, the person/persons who are speaking evil against you/others and be available to what the Holy Spirit will do to turn evil to good! Have I experienced injustices? Yes, I, as well as other members of my family have experienced the sting of injustice many times. How have I/my family dealt with them? We have tried to meet with, pray with and be reconciled to the individual (s) that may have accused, blamed, criticized, spread rumors or condemned us. Yet, there have been many times when the respective party/parties were not willing to meet, to talk, to pray, to communicate or to be reconciled. What is one’s responsibility in such a situation? Forgive the offender, ask for and receive God’s love through His Holy Spirit for this one(ones) and pray for him/her/them. Keep in mind that those that bring aggressive offense, hostile accusations and unsubstantiated events are usually very wounded vessels themselves, in need of love and understanding. They may also be very highly esteemed leaders in the Church and are accustomed to being "right," are seldom questioned when they speak and refuse to admit their wrongs. Pray for them! They, like you, are God’s beloved and prayer will change their heart toward you and others that have been hurt by them! Remember that Jesus warned His followers that offenses, (injustices) would come, yet, He warns, …but woe to that man by whom the offense comes! (Matthew 18:7b). Could it be that our Lord Jesus sees a multitude of people laden down with milestones of oppresssion, depression, drowning in the sea of unjust circumstances, both the offender and the offended? Matthew 18: 19 says, Again, I say to you, that if two of you agree (sumphoneo; Stong’s #4856, from sum, together, and phoneo, to sound. To be in accord, to be in harmony, like a symphony.) on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven." Thus, agreement begets unity in the spirit and wholeness in the Church, enabling the Body to realize it’s ordained potential, walking in justice and righteousness. Disagreement begets disunity and brokenness in the Church, therefore, the Body is then incapacitated to achieve it’s God-defined potential and injustice and unrighteousness reign bringing rupture, disease and destruction. For where two or three are gathered together in My Name, I am there in the midst of them. " (Matthew 18:20). Be gathered together in His Name, that He may be in the midst of us! Father, may the Church individually and corporately, forgive all trespasses, injustices leveled against us/them, confess our faults, repent of our injustices toward others and may we become a melodious symphony in the hearing of your ears, in Jesus’ Name, Amen!
