Nina May’s Daily Commentary (7-20-07) www.RWNetwork.net, www.ERRVideo.com
Senator Robert Byrd condemned Michael Vick on the Senate floor, for arranging illegal dogfights, saying it is “barbaric.” Repeatedly he says it is barbaric to allow dogs to fight to the death, train them to do this, torture them, shoot them and hang them. That’s odd . . . he never seemed to think it was barbaric when the KKK was pretty much doing exactly the same thing to black men when he was not only a member, but a recruiter for them.
Rapper, Young Meek, who produces Sac Town Raw, appeared on TV to justify his taping of young black girls fighting, punching, kicking, and inflicting serious pain on each other by saying, heh, its’ human nature, it happens in our streets everyday, I am just there to tape it. Hmm, I wonder if he will get six years in jail for that?
So now we have two people who think men are animals, dogs are civilized and it is barbaric to treat dogs like men. But we shouldn’t be too hard on them because a judge in Nebraska thinks that the word “rape” is too inflammatory in a rape case, so the rape victim is not allowed to use the word rape to describe what happened when she was raped by the raper. But a breeding stand found in Michael Vick’s yard, similar to those used by breeders of dogs, horses, cattle, etc. is called a “rape stand” and not a breeding stand. If it is ok to inflame the public by mislabeling a mechanism that many breeders of a variety of animals use, as a “rape stand”, then certainly this rape victim should be given the same right to use the word “rape” when what happened to her really was a rape. She was not a broodmare.
Everyone is so aghast at what Michael Vick did that they are falling all over each other to distance themselves from him, appalled that he is even allowed to breath the same air. They didn’t seem that offended though when a judge in Alabama refused to put an admitted, and convicted sex offender in jail for sodomizing three young children. They were even less concerned when judge Edward Cashman gave a man only 60 days in jail for molesting a six-year-old girl . . . for four years.
As sick as the treatment of these dogs is, it is really hard to get too exorcised about it when children are being treated worse, and there is no outrage. No complaints, no wringing of the hands in even feigned concern that these children have been exploited, violated, abused and traumatized, and all we are hearing about is some pit-bulls who have the reputation for doing exactly what they are bred to do, even if they have never taken part in “illegal” activity.
It’s ok to describe young black girls as basically being “animals” who are going to do this anyway, so why not film them tearing each other apart, make some money and move on. But to categorize what pit-bull naturally do . . . which is to tear each other apart, as being exploited, abused, and mistreated, is inconsistent compassion.
If Robert Byrd and everyone else who is so outraged by the way that these dogs were treated, let them ponder for just a second the incredible pain that a baby feels when a pair of scissors is plunged into the back of its head, so a tube can be inserted to suck its brains out. Or how horribly “barbaric” it is to cut off an unborn baby’s limbs, while in the womb, removing each piece carefully, counting the body parts, to make sure that nothing is left in the mother to cause her any pain.
You see though, if you mention the pain of an unborn baby you are categorized as a right wing religious conservative extremist nut job. But only if you care about the treatment of animals and the environment, are you a true, feeling, compassionate human being.
Excuse me, but can’t you be both? Can’t you find what Michael Vick did, and how he treated these animals, to be horrific, while at the same time agree that worse treatment to a fully viable, feeling, sentient human being is equally horrific? Ironically, conservatives will still find them both horrific and will agree also that children should be as protected under the law as animals, and pedophiles should at least get the same jail time that Michael Vick gets. Heck, if two border guards can be put in jail for ten to eleven years for stopping an illegal alien from completing an illegal drug deal in the US, then certainly child molesters and rapists should get the same amount of time.
If we can’t all agree that the ill treatment of dogs and children, or dogs and young black girls, or rape victims should be equally viewed with the same judgment and condemnation, then don’t be surprised when you discover people treating dogs in this inhumane fashion. Don’t be shocked that your daughters are clawing at each other in the streets and your sons are laughing in amusement as they tape it.
There was a time in our history when men were abused for sport because they were considered property, less than human, and inferior because of the color of their skin. And the men abusing them were probably good fathers, husbands, senators, etc. Because they didn’t see it as wrong. They felt if they showed compassion on some level, even though they digressed on another, then they were still a complete human being. They could love their kids and hang a black man without blinking. They could love their kids and still run the Nazi death camps. I am sure if Michael Vick has children that he loves them. I am sure the abortionist loves his own kids. And we know how the child molester feels about kids.
But to over react with misplaced and inconsistent responses to equally horrific events, even vilifying those who would say that abortion or child abuse is wrong, is to further divide the nation along a grizzly line that condones some behaviour, justifies another, and ignores it all when it is perpetrated against a class of people who are not deemed as important or significant as another.
So for Senator Robert Byrd and others offended by the “barbaric” act of dog fighting, I would suggest that you either show equal outrage by all barbaric activity, such as child abuse and abortion, or quite frankly, your protestations will have the loud hallow sound of one hand clapping.
