Setting the Record Straight for Senator "Double Standards" Byrd

Posted on: Tuesday, May 13th, 2003 by Renaissance Men

Rich Galen Friday, May 7, 2003The Democrats continue to miss the mark on this USS Abraham Lincoln thing. The Dems have trotted out Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia andCongressman Henry Waxman (D-CA) to demand - DEMAND - an investigation intothe Presidential event aboard the carrier off San Diego. As I mentioned onMSNBC the other day, Senator Byrd who quotes Plato and Cato need only goback to the early 90’s to find that President Bill Clinton flew onto thedecks of two aircraft carriers with nary a peep out of the old Byrd. In 1993Clinton flew onto the deck of the USS Theodore Roosevelt which was about 100miles off the coast of Virginia from which he did his Saturday radioaddress. A year later he went by launch from Portsmouth, England onto theUSS George Washington which was cruising through the English Channel.According to former Clinton staffers he: "toured the ship top-to-bottom, atedinner with the crew, gave a speech on deck (repeat: gave a speech on deck),did live network interviews from the flight deck (repeat: did liveinterviews from the flight deck), attended a memorial service, met with thecrew and ..." sit down. Are you sitting? Are you sure? Ok: "He steered theship part-way across the English Channel." After he was done not wastingtaxpayer money, President Clinton helicoptered to France where heparticipated in D-Day commemoration activities. We don’t even want to getinto the 1,200-person 30-million-dollar photo-op to China in 1998 while thescandal about Clinton doing you-know-what with you-know-who was in fullflower. Next point. The home port of the USS Abraham Lincoln is Everett,Washington. This, from the Everett paper the day of her arriving in port:"Even before the carrier docks, Gov. Gary Locke and 10 other officials willbe flown to the Lincoln on a helicopter -- weather permitting. Expected areU.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray..." as well as the Governor acouple of Congressmen and some state legislators. Senators Cantwell andMurray are Democrats. Senator Byrd said of the President’s visit, ""I amloath to think of an aircraft carrier being used as an advertising backdropfor a presidential political slogan, and yet that is what I saw." Onewonders whether Senator Byrd’s eyesight was good enough, and his loathinggreat enough, to pick Cantwell and Murray out of the crowd at the weeklymeeting of the Democratic Senate Caucus the better to wag his accusingfinger in their faces for using "an aircraft carrier as an advertisingbackdrop" for their own political purposes. One thinks not. Unmentioned inthat newspaper piece is a report that the Navy had to send their helicoptertransportation to Paine Field in Everett, Washington which, according to theairport’s website is a "General aviation and industrial airport hostingmajor tenants Boeing and BF Goodrich Aerospace," lest the august visitors beinconvenienced by actually have had to drive their cars to NAS WhidbeyIsland - where the helicopter lives. Next point. Senator Robert C. Byrd isthe all-time champion of pork barrel legislation for projects in WestVirginia. There are Robert C. Byrd highways. Robert C. Byrd bridges. RobertC. Byrd senior citizen centers. Robert C. Byrd public mosquito breedingponds, and Robert C. Byrd public mosquito rotisserie and picnic areas. Byrdhas gotten so much pork for West Virginia he should be known as TrichinosisBob. The only thing that ISN’T graced with his name is the State of WestVirginia itself - but he’s not done yet. Last point on all this. I do notunderstand why the Democrats - who have been rubbing their hands together inglee while awaiting the end of the 23-day quagmire in Iraq to be able totalk about domestic issues - come right out of the box and take on thePresident about the aircraft carrier. Every time one of the cable nets ranfootage of Byrd or, worse yet Henry Waxman they split the screen with thoseshots of the President, in full fighter-pilot swagger, posing for photoswith a clearly delighted crew. Memo to Robert Byrd and Henry Waxman: Thankyou Signed, The Bush/Cheney 2004 Campaign

Either You Are, Or You Aren't a Renaissance Woman!

A renaissance woman is someone who sets her own agenda for personal achievement and will not allow herself to be manipulated or intimidated by self-proclaimed spokesmen who try and wrap their political philosophies around terms like "equality," "choice," "peace," "tolerance" and "diversity." She understands that she has been created for such a time as this and embraces her destiny as a challenge and not a curse, no matter what her personal circumstances. She is a winner not a whiner, a leader not a follower, a victor, not a victim. She wants to change the paradigm of the feminist movement that has served to marginalize and ridicule women who do not follow their collective agenda.

Millions of women around the country, from all professions, backgrounds and cultures, are courageously picking up the mantel of leadership and virtue, that the feminist movement has squandered. They are providing thoughtful and accurate analysis, on a variety of issues, of where, and who we are as a nation.

Remember, this is not a club. It is a mindset!
